Do You Know Your BMI? What the Heck is That?

BMI- Basal Metabolism Index - is a measurement of obesity and health. For your convenience there is a BMI calculator on the right side navigational panel, just scroll down and get your index. Below is an article from ScienceBlogs.com  to help you further understand the critical importance of knowing what your BMI is and if you need to make any changes in your eating habits.

i-8540bc6ecce1d00a067cb4c76466a07c-obesity measure.jpg
If you go to your physician’s office and inquire about your weight status, he or she will measure your height and weight to derive your BMI (weight in kg divided by height in m squared). Then they will compare your BMI to that of established criteria to decide whether you are underweight (<18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5-24.9 kg/m2), overweight (25-29.9 kg/m2), or obese (>30 kg/m2) . Often times, this measure alone determines whether or not you receive lifestyle treatment. But how useful is this measure anyways? What does it tell you about your health? And finally, how helpful is it to measure when assessing the effect of a lifestyle (diet/exercise) intervention?
For quite some time I have been meaning to discuss some of the issues of solely relying on BMI as a measure of obesity and health, and a nice nudge from our friend ERV was just the motivation  I needed to finally get to work.

Before I get into the various limitations of BMI, I must point out that the measure is quite useful across large populations, as it is well correlated with the degree of adiposity, and of course it is extremely simple to measure in clinical practice.
Nevertheless, here are some of the key issues with BMI, particularly when used on an individual basis.
1. BMI does not differentiate between the Michelin Man and The Terminator
Ok, we might as well just get this abundantly obvious problem out of the way. I have heard countless times how one buff celebrity or another (e.g. Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Rock etc.) would be classified as overweight or obese according to their BMI due to their excess amount of muscle. Yes, this is absolutely true. BMI is a measure of relative weight; fat mass and muscle mass are not distinguished. Here’s what is equally true: the large majority of the general population with a BMI in the overweight or obese range does not look like Jerry Maguire or the Terminator. Also, if you seek advice from your physician about your “excess weight”, in case you have body dysmorphia and cannot yourself decide, they will quickly be able to assess whether your excess weight is due to your bulging muscles or your rolls of adipose tissue. So while this is an obvious problem, I would argue not the main issue.

2. BMI does not differentiate between apples and pears
For over 60 years, we have known that independent of how heavy a person is, the distribution of their body weight, or more generally the shape of their body is a key predictor of health risk. It is now well established that individuals who deposit much of their body weight around their midsection, the so called apple-shaped, are at much greater risk of disease and early mortality in contrast to the so called pear-shaped, who carry their weight more peripherally, particularly in the lower body. Thus, two individuals with a BMI of 32 kg/m2 could have drastically different body shapes, and thus varying risk of disease and early mortality.

Fortunately, a very simple measure allows you or your physician to decide whether your elevated BMI is of the apple or pear variety: waist circumference. Current thresholds suggest that a waist circumference above 88 cm in women and 102cm in men denotes abdominal obesity. Interestingly, for the same BMI level, those individuals with an elevated waist circumference have a greater risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mortality, and numerous other health outcomes. Thus, as studies from our laboratory have consistently suggested, waist circumference may be a more important measure of obesity and health risk than BMI. Currently, most researchers would agree that waist circumference should be measured along with BMI to adequately classify obesity-related health risk.

You can measure your own waist circumference by using a tape measure and wrapping it around your abdomen, at the level of the top of your hip bones. Make sure you measure at the end of exhalation, without sucking in your gut – you’re only fooling yourself!

3. BMI does not always budge in response to lifestyle change
Given the number of papers my supervisor, Dr. Ross, and I have published on the topic, I would argue this is the biggest drawback of using BMI: it doesn’t always change even though you may be getting healthier. This is particularly so if you adopt a physically active lifestyle, along with a balanced diet, but are not necessarily cutting a whole lot of calories. This lack of change in BMI or body weight is all too often interpreted as a failure, resulting in the disappointed individual resuming their inactive lifestyle and unhealthy eating patterns.

However, as we have argued most recently in a paper in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, several lines of evidence suggest that weight loss or changes in BMI are not absolutely necessary to observe substantial health benefit from a healthy lifestyle. Thus, an apparent resistance to weight-loss should never be a reason for stopping your healthy behaviours.

First, it is well established that increasing physical activity and associated improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with profound reductions in coronary heart disease and related mortality independent of weight or BMI. Second, exercise (even a single session) is associated with substantial reduction in several cardiometabolic risk factors (such as blood pressure, glucose tolerance, blood lipids, etc.) despite minimal or no change in body weight. Third, waist circumference and abdominal fat (arguably, the most dangerous fat) can be substantively reduced (10-20%) in response to exercise with minimal or no weight loss. In fact, significant reductions in fat mass often occur concurrent with equal increases in muscle mass in response to physical activity – equal but opposite (and beneficial!) changes which are not detected by alterations in body weight on the bathroom scale, and thus BMI.

So in the end, while BMI surely has its strengths in ease of use and pretty good reliability in large populations, on an individual basis, the greater focus should be on healthy behaviors: physical activity and a healthy diet. And if you must measure something, check your waist circumference.

Dr. Oz touts skin health benefits of Pycnogenol

We already know Dr. Oz loves astaxanthin. Now he’s on a new quest: to tell everyone about the wonders of Pycnogenol for achieving younger-looking skin.
In a recent segment on his show, Dr. Oz discussed how Pycnogenol – an extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree – can help your skin cells regain their moisture to give you a smoother appearance.
“Could [Pycnogenol] be the secret to looking seven years younger?” Dr. Oz asked his audience. “I researched it, and the consensus is yes.”
The secret, Dr. Oz says, behind Pycnogenol’s superior anti-aging effects is its “incredible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powers” that help boost the body’s hyaluronic acid levels by 44 percent. Hyaluronic acid, which plays an important role in tissue hydration, lubrication and cellular function, “is the primary agent that keeps skin tight and wrinkle-free,” Dr. Oz says.
“That means that in about 12 weeks of taking [P]ycnogenol, you may see smoother skin, a reduction in fine lines, and more supple skin,” Dr. Oz says on his website.

To longtime Market America customers, the benefits of Pycnogenol are no secret. Since 1995, Market America has be providing millions with the only isotonic form of Pycnogenol in the world in Isotonix OPC-3. Since then, Isotonix has been proud to include its isotonic form of Pycnogenol in other nutritional supplements, including:
  • Isotonix OPC-3 Beauty Blend, formulated to promote skin elasticity, support healthy collagen production, replenish essential vitamins and minerals for the skin, and provide the skin and body with improved antioxidant defenses;
  • Might-a-Mins Spectrum Isotonix OPC-3, which provides a strong antioxidant defense which is especially beneficial for children who need neurological, metabolic, or digestive support;
  • Prime Joint Support Formula by Isotonix, endorsed by Basketball Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, the only joint supplement on the market to deliver three primary bone & joint ingredients – glucosamine, Pycnogenol and hyaluronic acid – in isotonic form;
  • and Isotonix Champion Blend Plus, endorsed by basketball superstar Carmelo Anthony, which helps the body needs to preserve your muscles with essential nutrients, keep your body’s defenses up with powerful antioxidants, and provide you with a huge boost of energy from great vitamins.
While other supplements on the market can claim to have Pycnogenol, the superior Isotonix delivery system ensures that its ingredients – including Pycnogenol – are absorbed by the body in the most efficient, effective manner. Without the need for fillers and binder found in most pills and tablets, Isotonix nutritional supplements deliver maximum results in each and every serving.

How to optimize your Facebook fan page SEO ~Guest post by Nathan Latka

There are a lot of rumors going around about the proper ways to optimize your Facebook fan page for the search engines (SEO). Some people suggest using keywords in the filenames of your uploads, and others say you need to have every URL you own linked to your fan page. If you’re anything like me, you don’t particularly have time to sit around and search for a tip here and a tip there, only to find out weeks later that it did you no good.
This post provides a few more tips on optimizing your Facebook page for SEO right now.

Choose the best name for your Facebook page

1This may sound like a no-brainer. However, it’s the most basic step when it comes to optimizing your brand on Facebook, and is also the most important.
There is always the temptation to stuff your fan page name with tons of keywords, like “Bob’s Bakery – Muffins, Bagels, Cookies, Breads – Catering & Events.” In actuality, having a name like this can hurt your viral growth rate inside Facebook. If you appear too spammy, your fans will be less likely to engage with your page, let alone share posts and updates with their friends. In fact, people can even hide your updates from their news feed – the horror!
Don’t be too generic, either. Facebook’s intent behind fan pages is that they represent real businesses, brands, personalities, etc. By choosing something too generic, like Travel, Sports, Fishing, etc., you run the risk of Facebook shutting down your ability to post updates and reach out to new fans.
Quick tip: The first word in your fan page title is given the most weight by Google.

Create a custom fan page vanity URL

Use a brief 140-character description for your fan page so your whole message displays in the search engine’s snippet
2After your fan page has 25 Likes, Facebook gives you the ability to create a unique URL (or usernames as Facebook calls them) for the page. Because URLs are heavily weighted by search engines, it is vital that your fan page URL reflects an aspect of your business.
If, by some misalignment in the stars, you find that another fan page has claimed your business’ name already, make sure to include what your business is about in the URL. You can check out some different username options Facebook offers before selecting your one for your fan page.

Use keywords in strategic locations on your fan page

3Just like traditional websites, keyword optimization is the most fundamental form of on-site SEO. The most important pieces to pay attention to are the About section, Mission, and Company Description, since these areas are actually pulled from your fan page as SEO elements.
Here is an example of how a search engine would index your page:
SEO Title = Your fan page name
Meta Description = Fan page name + the About section of your page

H1 = Your fan page name

To optimize your page for local searches, it is very important to include your address, city, state, and zip. For product-related searches, the Company Overview, Mission, and Products fields should be filled in with your appropriate information.
Quick tip: You may want to consider using a brief 140-character description for your fan page — perhaps similar to your website’s metadata — so your whole message displays in the search engine’s snippet.

Include your phone number and address

4As surprising as it sounds, there are a lot of businesses out there that don’t include this type of info on their fan page. As a majority of your sales may be from online traffic, it can appear to be not quite so important for you to include. But remember, indexing your brand for local search results is crucial to growing your Facebook page.
In addition, Google places higher importance on pages with specific information like your business’s phone number and address. So, pages that include this type of data can effectively increase your brand’s overall SEO.

Backlink to your fan page on existing channels

5The more inbound links to your page, the more authoritative your page is according to Google, and you will be ranked higher. That is why it is very important to bloggers when they have their content linked to from other websites, blogs, etc.
This same principle applies to your Facebook fan page. So, where it is appropriate, include a link to your fan page from your other digital channels, like your website, blog, and Twitter profile.

Optimize Facebook fan page status updates

6When posting updates to your Facebook wall, remember that the first 18 characters of a Facebook post serve as the meta description. So, take advantage of the option when Facebook prompts you to “Write something…” since that text will be considered the SEO title for that update. Including direct links to your small business website in your updates is also a good practice to follow.

Quick tip: Just like your fan page’s name, Google places a higher importance on the first word of your update, so you may want to consider making that a keyword.

SEO for Facebook Notes

7Facebook Notes is something that has been underutilized. When used appropriately, Facebook Notes can provide your fan page with an effective way at increasing your overall SEO. The SEO elements pulled in from Facebook Notes are:
SEO Title = the title of your note
Meta data = Your fan page name wrote a note titled, your note’s title

Facebook Notes gives your page the ability to create multiple “pages” underneath the main fan page. Notes are also a good way to expand on special offers or events that your business is hosting and have them indexed in search engines.
(A note about Notes: Facebook Notes were sort of put out to pasture in late 2001, early 2012 with the advent of Timeline and the new rule that status updates can run as long as 63,206 characters, or about 9,000 words. They’re still there; just follow this convention: https://www.facebook.com/jdlasica/notes)

Bottom line for Facebook fan page SEO

Don’t forget that the overarching objective of Facebook SEO is adding to the value of your overall brand. It is important to pay attention to the comparison between raw traffic and engagement level.
While using the methods above can help boost your search engine results page ranking, the most crucial part is that it coincides with an awesome product and incredible engagement to grow your following.

DIY: Lemone and Sugar Body & Face Scrub

DIY: Lemon and Sugar Body & Face Scrub
"This DIY lemon and sugar scrub beauty obsession can be used on both the body and face. It is ideal for rough spots like feet, knees, elbows and hands. It’s also great for nail beds and cuticles. To use on the face, this scrub works wonderfully for those with acne-prone skin. But, of course, the entire body can benefit from a lemon and sugar exfoliation that leaves skin soft and insanely smooth. Indulge in this scrub from head to toe!

What you’ll need:
1/2 fresh lemon
1/2 cup of granulated sugar
1 tbls of olive oil
1 tbls of organic honey
1 medium sized tupperware bowl with lid
Benefits of the Ingredients:
Lemon – A natural source of Vitamin C; an ingredient commonly used to lighten sun and age spots and even out skin tone; A natural astringent that tightens pores and brightens the complexion.
Sugar – A natural exfoliator; a natural source of glycolic acid which evens out skin tone, cleans pores, and improves overall skin texture by removing dead, dull skin cells.
Olive Oil – High in Vitamin E which soothes and heals skin; a natural moisturizing ingredient often used for it’s anti-aging benefits.
Honey – A natural source of anti-oxidants making it a perfect ingredients for age preventions; a natural humectant so it locks water into the skin keeping the complexion hydrated; the antibacterial properties benefit acne-prone skin by reducing breakouts.
Instructions:
Add lemon juice and olive oil in to a bowl (I like to use tupperware as it is easy storage) until they mix together. Add the honey and wisk or stir quickly until the ingredients bind together into a medium thick consistency. You can add or subtract the amount of olive oil and honey that you use depending on how thick you want your scrub to be. I would keep the lemon to the juice of one half of a freshly cut lemon for every 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. Add in the sugar and mix. If you sense that there is not enough sugar to get the scrubbing done, add a bit more. Again, this is a personal preference.
As a body scrub: Apply to body, paying extra close attention to elbows, knees, feet and hands (nails and cuticles especially) and rub in circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse. Enjoy the silky softness of your impossibly smooth skin.
As a face scrub: The lemon and sugar scrub is also great for the face, but use with gentle circular motions. This scrub is ideal for people who suffer from breakouts and acne as all of the ingredients are highly beneficial to acne prone skin. Lemon tightens pores and evens out the skin tone, sugar removes dead skin cells and cleans pores, olive oil heals acne scaring, and honey prevents future breakouts.
To use, follow the same recipe instructions then apply to clean face in gentle, circular motions. Be cautious of using on open wounds as the lemon may sting. Leave on for 7-10 minutes and rinse with cool water.

There are several ways to make a lemon and sugar scrub but I have found this one to be the easiest and most effective."

How to Create Gorgeous Lips

Creating beautiful lips is not as difficult, time consuming or expensive as you might think. There are 3 steps needed to give you healthy & wrinkle-free lips.
  • Primer-helps fill in the lines
  • Lip Base-promote the true color, smoother application and longer-lasting lip application
  • Treatment Promotes anti-aging by protecting from environmental factors and promoting hydration

These 3 steps will support anti-aging, normal collagen and elastin production and environmental factors that otherwise over time can damage your lips. The Motives Lip Lock provides all 3 in one! This is why I love this product because it takes the guess work, time and cost out of the equation of keeping lips soft supple and healthy.  Plus, the Avocado oil and vitamin E has key ingredients, promote hydration of lips, and create a non-waxy texture.

Nail Color Trend for 2013

The spring trend for 2013 and nail colors is something I didn't expect but pleasantly pleased. Don't put away your black, blue and green nail polish away! So go ahead and add more vibrant color and sparkle to your nails for a sexy, stunning look no matter what the occasion you'll look your best and hottest! Make sure though, the ingredients are free of  toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate.

Here are some steps to guide you in applying nail polish:
  • Apply Base Coat first to protect the nail from stains and increase your polish’s staying power
  • Apply nail polish in three strokes: one from the nail base to the tip along the center, two and three around the base and up each side
  • Allow 3-4 minutes for the nail polish to dry before applying another coat
  • Allow 3-4 minutes for the nail polish to dry and apply  Clear Top Coat to polish off the finish
Tip: Apply  Clear Top Coat the first and third day following your manicure. This will help hold the polish even longer and prevent it from chipping.

Do you have a color that you prefer to wear for the weekend? Sparkles? Designs? Sends us your pics so we can post them here.

How to Apply Blush for all Skin Types & Tones

Blush helps to make your beautiful face glow and look alive. Application is fairly straightforward but it's important to get it right to avoid applying too much regardless of the look you are after.
Here are some basic tips: Select a shade of blush according to your skin and hair color:
  • Blond and ginger hair with olive complexion - blush of oranges tones.
  • Dark and auburn haired with fair complexion - pastel blush, called powdered.
  • Pale or grey skin - salmon, coral or pink blush. brown blush

Make sure blush and lipstick are similar in color value. That is, even if you are going light on the lips and heavy on the cheeks or vice versa, wear corals with corals, etc.

Let's get started: Here's Jennifer Goodwin w/ a pinch cheek color & application.
  •  Use a Kabuki Brush or Blush Brush and get an even amount of blush in the bristles.
  • Tap Excess.
pic from Motives

  • Then, smile gentle use a circular motion around the cheek area that is elevated (the smile)

For a longer stroke of the blush
  • Smile gently and sweep the brush in a U shape along your cheek bone and out to your temple. Make sure you blend the blush with the rest of your makeup to ensure a natural look.
For very fair skin I recommend either light shade of pink ex. Flushed or for a more natural look, Naughty.  Motives Press Blush comes in a wide variety of shades so you can find a shade that works best for you.

For oily skin, our press blushes works well on all types of skin. However, on especially humid days you may have to reapply your blush just once.

For dry skin , a cream blush is great! For even better results, combine cream and powder together. "It helps my blush stay on longer and looks more luminous," said makeup artist Laura Mercier in O Magazine. Keep in mind stains -- great for well-moisturized skin, not dry skin -- tend to dry very fast so blend well and fast.

For combination skin, stay with a powder press blush for best results.

If you use a concealer and foundation, apply your concealer than foundation and finish with your blush. Make sure to blend as you go to create a natural and even look. When you’re satisfied with your coloring, dust Motives Translucent Loose Powder over your entire face to set your look and keep it looking fresh all day.

As a final touch, and to set your makeup for the day try a makeup finisher  as your final step!

There you have it. One of my favorite motto's is 'basics are best' and here you have it. What's your favorite way of wearing as well as shade of color?

How to Apply Powder Eye Shadow vs Creme

A big debate amongst beauty professionals is which works better – powder eye shadow vs. cream.
Personally, I like both depending on my mood and the occasion.  For going out in the evening the cream gives a subtle but elegant look, while for day time the press eye shadows created by Motives offers dozens of different shades. If you really want a dramatic look you can wear both the press powder and cream eye shadow.

Below Loren Ridinger, creator of Motives and Motives for LaLa, povides a quick tutorial below for a step-by-step guide on how to apply powder eye shadow vs. cream so you can decide which works best for you!

Powder Eye Shadow: To reduce the fallout associated with powder eye shadow, apply with a patting motion using the Motives Eye Blender Brush before blending. Use one color on the lid for a neutral look or add a deeper shade in the crease for more definition. Motives’ powder shadows are crease-proof and deflect light away from fine lines to help visibly reduce the signs of aging for a bright, polished look.

Cream Eye Shadow: Motives Crème Shadow is best applied using our Motives Concealer Brush or Motives Detailing Brush. It can even be used as an eye base to moisturize and prepare the eyelid for the application of pressed eye shadow. There is no right or wrong way to use cream eye shadows! During application the shadow appear creamy, yet when it’s set it gives a soft, shimmery look that doesn’t fade.
Tell me your personal preference – powder eye shadow vs. cream?
